1945 | UN Charter signed—founding of United Nations. |
1945 | American Association for the United Nations founded. An outgrowth of the League of Nations Association, formed in 1923, it was a member based organization whose focus was to educate and inform the public about the United Nations. Dr. Charles Mayo was the first President. Clark Eichelberger, named Executive Director and Eleanor Roosevelt became Chairman of the Board of Governors. |
1946 | AAUN National coordinated first UN Week October 22-28. |
1947 | US Committee for the UN was founded. It was established to create and stimulate UN Day observances throughout the country. The State Dept. appointed a prominent American to be chairman of a UN Day Committee. The Committee was composed of US national volunteer organizations which subscribed to the principles of the UN Charter. |
1954 | AAUN—Albany Chapter founded. Dr. Florence Harris, President. Information Center opened in Albany Community Center. Prior to this, there had been East Bay Council for United Nations—Albany Chapter, composed of various service groups and League of Women Voters. |
1955 | AAUN—Alameda County Chapter—Oakland founded. Arthur Pritchard, President. First office located across from Oakland City Hall. The Center staffed by volunteers 6 days a week—sold UNICEF cards, flags, publications; served as meeting room, space for events. |
1957 | Information Center (Alameda County Chapter) moved to Plymouth Congregational Church, 3871 Piedmont Ave, Oakland. Later moved to a room in the Oakland Museum. |
1958 | AAUN National held its first Biennial Convention. |
1960 | 15th Anniversary of UN—AAUN-AC and City of Oakland held celebration on October 23 at Lakeside Park. Program included a Parade of Nations, presentation of the UN flag, music, and speeches. |
1964 | UNA-USA founded—formed from merger of AAUN and US Committee for the UN (a group of 138 national organizations supporting the work of the UN). |
1964 | UNA Information Center opened at 1550 Shattuck Ave Co-op, Berkeley, August 1. Sue Dettweiler, first Director. |
1965 | 20th anniversary of UN—AAUN—AC moved office to two rooms in Oakland Public Library. Dean Robert E. Stone is elected President. Chapter organized a Convocation in June at the Greek Theater at UC Berkeley. UN Secretary-General U-Thant and Alex Quaison Sackey, President of the General Assembly attended. |
1966 | Edgar Kaiser appointed by President of the US to be National Chairman of the UN 21st Birthday Celebration. |
1966 | Committee formed to have the UN flag placed in a prominent place in Jack London Square, Oakland. Chairman Jean Apaydin brought Arthur Goldberg, US Ambassador to the UN, to speak at the dedication ceremony on March 25. Since 1966 the Chapter has held a ceremony each year around UN Day October 24 to accompany the raising of the UN flag at Jack London Square. |
1974 | UNA-USA launched its magazine “The Interdependent.” |
1975 | On 30th Anniversary of UN, a plaque, commemorating the founding of the UN and the raising of the flagpole, was installed at Jack London Square. |
1979 | Mary Lee Trampleasure became UNA Information Center Director. In the early seventies the Center had moved to a house at 2004 Cedar St. across from the Shattuck Ave. Co-op. Mila Harper served as Director during that time. Mila died in 1978 and the Center moved back to the Berkeley Co-op. |
1983 | UNA East Bay Chapter is formed by the merger of the Alameda County Chapter and Albany- Berkeley-Costa Chapter (Feb 27). Carol Pulcifer elected the new chapter President. The UNA Information Center in Berkeley continues as an outlet for UNICEF sales while the Oakland office at Central Place continues as the general business office for the newly formed chapter. |
1984 | US departed from UNESCO. |
1989 | UNA Information Center moved to 1796 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley (May 1). Later it expanded to 1798 Shattuck. |
1994 | Kara Speltz became Center Director after Mary Lee Trampleasure retired in July after serving over 15 years as Center Director. . |
1995 | UC Charter Day—April 28—Dr. Glenn Seaborg, Nobel Laureate and UNA member, presented a plaque to UC Printing Office for printing original UN Charter in 1945. This was first international treaty not hand written. |
1995 | 50th Anniversary of UN—marked by all day celebration on October 21 at Jack London Square, Oakland with the Parade of 185 flags representing UN member nations, UN flag-raising, speeches, entertainment by various multicultural groups, painting of tiles for World Wall for Peace, storytelling and Model UN demonstration. |

1997 | United Nations Foundation is established after Ted Turner donated $1 billion to the UN and UN causes. |
2000 | UNA Information Center closed temporarily in June 2000 due to budgetary constraints. It reopened in August at its new location behind Andronico’s Store at 1403 B Addison St., Berkeley. Mary Lee Trampleasure served as Interim Director. |
2002 | US rejoined UNESCO. |
2002 | UNA USA launched Young Professionals for International Cooperation (YPIC). |
2004 | Enver Rahmanov, became new Information/UNICEF Center Director August 1. A 40th Anniversary Celebration of the Center is held end of July. |
2005 | 60th Anniversary of UN—Started with a celebration October 21 in Alameda “We Are the Ones,” a participatory experience of song, dance, and inspiration that highlighted the Millennium Development Goals. On October 23 at Jack London Square there was the Parade of Nations and UN flag-raising with speeches, choral music, and proclamations by civic, political, and youth leaders ending with release of 60 peace doves. There was also an international food festival and multi-cultural music/dance performances with children’s and family activities, arts/crafts. In the evening there was a UN Day concert for peace and humanity at Paramount Theatre with the Oakland/East Bay Symphony. |
2006 | East Bay Chapter presented first Global Citizen Awards at annual UN Day Dinner and Celebration at I House, Berkeley. The awards are made to individuals and organizations in Alameda and Contra Costa counties who have made outstanding contributions toward achieving the UN Millennium Development goals. |
2006 | Enver Rahmanov resigned as Center Director. Mary Lee Trampleasure returned as Interim Director. |
2008 | Carol Mosher and Ingeborg Nienhold became new Center coordinators. |
2009 | Monthly Dinner Forums are introduced by East Bay Chapter. They feature dinner at various local restaurants followed by a speaker/facilitator discussing topics of current international significance. |
2010 | UNA USA formed strategic alliance with UN Foundation. UNA USA becomes the membership program of the UNF. |
2012 | UNA East Bay Center moved to 2839 Telegraph Ave., (former CIL site), Berkeley. |
